Once again this year, we wish you well with a new version of the Madonna and Child Jesus with grapes. This time I found a painting from the German school, by Lucas Cranach the Younger, who painted a Madonna with a very sweet face, absorbed in her thoughts. In the meantime, the child is concentrating on eating his grapes, with the sleeping little St. John at his side. Among Santa Clauses and other glittering, consumerist images, we like these better because they represent our culture. I find the image of motherhood to be soothing and auspicious in this world that burns with wars, migration, poverty, a wicked economy and neglect of the environment.
The period after the harvest is also one of reflection and rethinking. As we do every year, we publish our ‘little journal’, mainly to tell how the last harvest went and some memories of 2023.
